Fred D’Orey, international surfing champion, opened his first Totem store in 1994. As both one of the world’s sports icons and a globe-trotter, D’Orey traveled the world constantly inspired by the cultures and colors of different spaces.
Today the brand is known for the bold colors of Rio de Janeiro and prints that mix tribal with psychedelic designs. The patterns Totem is famous for come from D’Orey’s motivations to learn the art of dying and printing from the traditional Batik craftsmen of Bali.
Filling a gap in the fashion market, Totem began as men’s beachwear, which quickly morphed into unisex clothing due to the demand. Still based in Brazil, with its first store in Ipanema, Totem pays true homage to the good taste of Rio de Janeiro. |
